bosch electric fuel pump
ned - 7/5/06 at 11:14 PM

the out of tank type as out of vauxhall astras, cavaliers, carltons and some pugs and other cars. think the bosch code is 0580 464 008

mine doesn't seem to work, think it must be seized. it makes a quiet whizzing sound when run but doesn't pass any fuel through stopped me firing up my engine tonight

Ned,

Does the pump have a one way valve at the output end ? if so whip it off and test again.

Also is it having to suck up hill from the tank ? not sure if these type can but may be wrong.

Try soaking in WD or similar and give it a 'starter motor tap'

I am running a bosch 0580 254 957 Cosworth ebay - £26

Thanks agriv8 - the pump is controlled by a relay from my dta and there is power getting to it. It is being gravity fed from a collector pot which is being fed by a facet red top pump and it has fuel to it.
the pump is identical to this one:

and as far as i can see there is no valve - you can see into the pump at each end.

The pump is making a quiet whiring sound but is not getting hot and the outlet is totally dry. We've tried it straight across a battery and in situ and have tested all the wiring.

I might have a line on a pump off ebay but if anyone has one i'd be glad of a spare.

cheers,

Ned.

Yup looks very similar to mine.

Running the same setup as you. Facet at back to swirl pot gravity from swirl to pump. Relayed live from efi brain.

Mine makes the same buzz hum. Just checking ned and not wanting to insult the old inteligence presurised output is between the terminals are you running the right way round ( this is where the one way valve would be but as you say looks like its not fitted on your model ).

Agriv8

was just going to say that! Maybe wrong polarity, if its buzzing then it should work!

On another vane along the same lines is the plastic end the input or output (I can't remember but it's worth checking). Also I've had one of these to bits before and in the base there is a roller type set up which is easily jammed with debris. If your's is making a buzzy rattly sound (techy speak) then i'd say its running but not pumping. I dont recall from memory any valves inside the pump.
Not a lot of help am I?

Yes 12mm is gravity fed from swirl pot and 8mm outlet between connectors is out to fuel line to fuel rail.

Ned.

and its a very very quiet whirring sound you can barely hear it.

Ned,

Right we are going to get tichnical here mine makes a buzz / hum similar to that of the ones when I get my head shaved by those electronic clippers.

Wharl or what ever they are.

does that make sense sounds like a scrap yard or ebay purchase might be in order

got a second hand one hopefully going in the post later today, mine def does not make a noise like an electric shaver, its barely a whisper as if its running at a very low speed or barely at all - i will soak it in some fuel to see if it loosens up but was untested when bought so i'm not holding out any hope.
