How many rivnuts are you planning to set? If there aren't too many, you can use a length of steel strip with a bolt, nut and washer.

Drill a hole in the steel strip, leave enough for a handle. Grease the bolt, then fit the nut & washer. Put the bolt through the hole in the steel strip, then thread on the rivnut fully. Push the rivnut into the hole, and start winding the nut down against the steel strip. You might need another spanner to stop the bolt turning (3 hands are useful!).

This will set the rivnut properly, but will rapidly knacker the nut & bolt - if you manage to set 6 or 7 before they give out you'll be doing well.

If you have a lathe you can make a fancy one, as described on my website (link below). That one is much easier to use, and lasts for years!
