Forget that......£120,000 to build !

Confused but excited. - 4/5/07 at 02:23 PM

If it costs just over £60K to replace, why did it cost over £120K to build in the first place?

Does the £120K include all the coffee and burgers consumed during the build?
Quick set of wheels though.

DarrenW - 4/5/07 at 02:26 PM

It has been alleged elsewhere that the owner of said car is a strange character. I cant for the life of me think that the figures are entirely factual.

i thought that se7ens in any guise have limitations on speed as a result of the aerodynamics. Maybe it was 50K to build and 70K to hire the vacuum chamber wind tunnel for a few days.

carlgeldard - 4/5/07 at 02:26 PM

How much!!!!!!!!!!

speedyxjs - 4/5/07 at 02:37 PM

Didnt westfield or caterham do a 500hp 7?

Guinness - 4/5/07 at 02:37 PM

A perfect example of the "Law of Diminishing Returns"

His Car = Performance 0-60 2.5s, 0-100 6.1s 0-140 - 12.2secs
Max speed 159mph. Cost £120K!

My Car = Performance 0-60 3.5s, 0-100 ?s 0-140 - ?secs
Max speed 127mph. Cost £7.5K!

that's quite a few night shifts overtime

at that price I'd want the front and rear wing to be diamond encrusted carbon fibre.

cost to build includes labour which I guess does not come into play for insuracne rpelacement.

Nice to see they spent 40p on the paintjob and got a man with no taste to do it....

Fastest Caterham? When? In 1993 when C&CC ran the article?

I suspect the painters told him they used unobtainium paint which weighs -10kg and is invisible to radar detectors. It was probably a snip at £25k. Probably cost a little more because the painters guide dog had to do it.

That's the only way I can see to get to those kinds of costs. The engine is full race (if the figures are to be believed) but how much could you spend on an XE?, unless you have it professionally rebuilt every month and just add that to the pile of receipts of course.

BenB - 4/5/07 at 06:17 PM

Blimey- thats one ugly mother!!
WTF is with that paint job!!!
Jeesh!
45k- got to be joking!

ChrisGamlin - 4/5/07 at 09:20 PM

Its the "famous" Arnie Webb's car, seach Blatchat and you'll find loads of posts about him and from him

To be fair it probably has had over £100k spent on it over the years, but thats including two or three chassis stripdown / rebuilds and even more engine rebuilds, so its not like it would cost you anything like the same money to build an equivalent spec car from scratch, in fact you could probably build an equivalent spec car brand new for less than the money he's advertising it for!

Not from the factory no, Caterham did an R500, a badge that indicates 500bhp/ton (ie about 240bhp in ~500kgs), probably what you were thinking of?

There is a chap on WSCC who shoehorned a 500bhp Yank V8 iinto a Westie, its a very nicely made car but its a bit of a luxury cruiser by all accounts.

Yeah probably. My car when i have finished will have 322hp. Should i be woried?

ChrisGamlin - 5/5/07 at 06:18 PM

I imagine with a Jag engine its going to weigh significantly more than 500kgs though, so maybe!

Dazza - 5/5/07 at 09:56 PM

buy it for £45, then get that silly insurance valuation, (yeah right) and then it goes bang, £15000 profit.....

hahahahahaha

more like £20k to buy and value £25k. and i think i am being generous.

rather have a decent quick locost for £10k......

you got to love tose dreamers hehe

Krismc - 6/5/07 at 11:17 AM

You can buy a crate 300bhp duratec for £8k, then say £15k on a caterham!!

erm that leaves £97k for auxcillarys,

woodster - 8/5/07 at 09:17 AM

BLINKIN ECK....i think Mr Hicost needs to hand over his title/name

Andy D - 10/5/07 at 03:29 PM

I think this is the car in action in an earlier guise..CLICKY

Not sure what this's got to do with "Bargains elsewhere" though...
