Motor capacitor start help plz
big_wasa - 5/5/10 at 06:16 PM

Ive buggered my compressor Having run it for a fare while the pitch of the motor changed. I stoped it and let it cool. I tried to restart it but it just buzzed.

Any way the capacitor has melted into a big blob.

The only info readable on it is 400v 85c.

Can any one give me an idea of capacitance so I can get another ?

Its 240v 3hp belt driven job made by Blue point / Snap on

Any help would be great. Inclueding where I could get one on the high street.

You'll probably need 400v 50micro (can't find the symbol) farrad, the 85c is the temp range ie -25c to +85c.

Have a look in yellow pages for a local motor rewinding company - you should be able to pick up a second-hand capacitor for very little money (or a new one cheap-ish).

The place I went to in Colchester put new bushes in my old 1HP motor and sold me a used but sound capacitor for under £10 (although that was quite a while ago).

I got one from a local electronics firm for a pressure washer and it cost me about £9 new, it was similar rating to the one you are looking for from JPG electronics in Chesterfield.

I got one a couple of months back from RS components

Had a quick google

Looks like the Cap value is going to be 270uf -330uF 250VAC rating.
for 2.2kw / 3hp.

Had a look at mine (3hp) but in a steel cover so can't read it.

Larger motors seem to use Aluminium Cap's.
