Cross threaded thermostat bolt
pdm - 9/9/10 at 07:57 PM

Hi

I took the thermostat off my donor engine tonight to get the power steering bracket off.

The bolt felt cross threaded to me and when I cam to put it back on, it didn't feel right so I've not put it back on yet.

Can I simply retap the bolt hole ? Will that fix it and be strong enough to then bolt the thermostat back into to ?

thanks
Paul

Very carefully re-tap using an intermediate to start with --- bolt the cover in place to help guiding the tap in straight.
If you have any doubts about the retapped thread use some studding inplace of the bolt and Loctite Bearing fit to hold it.

I would say so, I would also put some instant gasket stuff around as well so you don't have to tighten it too much.

Cheers
