If you are good at arc (or stick as I call it) welding you should be able to build a chassis OK. I'm sure there must be others on this froum that have done it before.

Of course it is possible if your stick skills are exceptional.

There is a guy on our local forum www.locost.co.za who has done it and am sure there must be some here as well.

I plan to use MIG/TIG on my chassis build with stick in hard to reach places.

With a cheap air cooled unit, it will be a bit of a trial, but not impossible.

With an oil cooled welder or an inverter, it would be a doddle.

It's all due to the OCV (open circuit voltage). the air cooled ones only go to 48v, but inverters can go upto 95v - it makes striking the arc very easy. the arc is also MUCH more controllable.

Vamp, by no means am I an expert welder but consider using a 7018 rod if you must arc weld.

Apart from it's higher stength it also exhibits elastic properties if I can remember so that it'll not crack under stress that easily.

From what I've heard this rod requires special storage techniques, special handling technique, etc. It seems that it also is best at above 120 Amps so it may not be entirely suitable for Locost tubing.

Do a bit of research before you start. I've never used 7018 so I may be wrong on some aspects.
