cast welding
lexi - 22/3/06 at 12:45 AM

Got a cast manifold to try and weld. It`s a four branch off my Accord. Lovely crack all the way round a branch. I have cast iron rods so I thought to heat it and have a go after filing a little groove to let some filler rod in. Keep it hot as it cools. It`s worth a try as a new one from Honda is 275+vat. Found one after much searching in a breakers and guess what?

275 no VAT??

Blummin hard work welding a cast structure, but you have nothing to lose, so go for it.

Brazing works quite well on cast iron.
Years ago I made some V6 manifolds for a cortina out of cut down corsair V4 manifolds all brazed together..Worked a treat!

You can also arc weld cast if you use a rod for cast and heat the manifold up first with oxy-acet.

try hitting it as it cools down to de stress it not to hard else more welding will be needed

What year Accord ? -- and which engine size and type ? If its a 2.2 non vetec I might have a manifold for it.

I had two big cracks in the cast manifold of my MK2 Golf. Both along each face of cylinder no.3.

As instructed here by Mark Allanson I ground out a groove along the length of the crack about 2-3mm deep. Then ground the rust off the surrounding area, then just whacked the welder up to full and filled the groove with weld.

Have done about 6000 miles since and all appears fine still.

Cheers,
James

That`s the one. Can you give it a check for cracks and a price to post to Paisley.

Defo no cracks was running yesterday just before I sold the dizzie from it -- If I can get off tomorrow afernoon I can drop it off in Paisley on Friday need to charge 20 quid for it as a fair ammount of work getting it off.
