Do you know what a spokeshave is?
Fred W B - 12/2/07 at 05:45 PM

This evening I go into our local all singing all dancing diy/building materials/tools etc superstore. It's apparently the biggest in Africa, stocks 34 000 different lines, everthing your heart could desire.

All except what I wanted, which was a spokeshave. They had to round up half a dozen DIY advisers, tool shop managers, floor managers etc before we found one that had a vague idea what I was after.

So, a poll. l

Cheers

I'm somewhere between option 3 and 4!

I have (atleast) one that was handed down to me by my grandfather....

but I've never used it!

Cheers,
James

I knew what it was,(remember using one in woodwork at school)

David Jenkins - 12/2/07 at 05:50 PM

I have one in a drawer, next to a selection of wood planes...

RazMan - 12/2/07 at 05:50 PM

Yup, and I'm old enough to hand it down to my grandson now

MattCraneCustoms - 12/2/07 at 05:52 PM

well I'm only 20 and I know what they are, we have 2. Always using them. Can't tick the 4th though, as they weren't handed down by me grandad!!
Regards
Matt

Got one in the draw at home. Handy little implement

Peteff - 12/2/07 at 06:03 PM

I ticked the fourth option and then realised I now have a different one as the old one was "borrowed" and never came back . I used to use it a lot more before the Surform came out.
Now where did I leave my adze, anyone got one I can borrow?

Quite happy to admit that I've never heard of them before! But I think I want one now! In fact I 'm sure I could use one

Actually after a google search I think it is something my grandfather might of had.

"spoke " refers to wagon wheel spokes.

I have two versions.

arrybradbury - 12/2/07 at 07:20 PM

It sounds like something i should look forward to getting from my grandad along with his lagonda rapier (i wish)

smart51 - 12/2/07 at 07:34 PM

I've got one. It was cheaper than buying a plane and for the amount of use it was going to get, it was a good buy.

Catpuss - 12/2/07 at 08:31 PM

Yep, still need another though. Saw one in B & Q recently.

Use them for making spear and Dane axe shafts.

Jed - 12/2/07 at 09:29 PM

I use them when making gun stocks. A very useful tool.

givemethebighammer - 12/2/07 at 09:30 PM

I think I have one in amongst my great grandfathers wood working tools (he was a carpenter). My father told me when he was a young boy he thought his grandfather was very rich because of the chests full of gold he had in his workshop. Only it wasn't gold they were coffin fittings! (still made of metal in those days). The tools don't get much use now as most of the stuff I do is with metal not wood.
