I wana clean my sump up abit but its got some awkward shapes to it so i thought blasting it would get into all the little bits.
Can it be done?
Cheers
Yep - just be sure it's VERY clean inside before you re-fit it !
wkd cheers claire, ye i figured i dont want sand flwoing around my engine
I have done it with ali components before they come up lovely like a brushed finish.
try it out first on a test piece!!!!!!!!!!!
make sure the blast media is not too abrasive and the pressure not to high or you could destroy you part.
you might want to bolt some hardboard to the mounting face so as no to damage it
Alternatively, find your local vapour blasting firm and get them to do it - nice clean finish and should be less risk of damage
... or bead blast.
The media needs to be softer than the metal*, otherwise fine particles can get embedded in the surface. When its get hot the fine embedded grit can
be released into the oil.
*i.e. I wouldn't grit or sand blast metal that will be in contact with engine oil.

but go easy and stop if it cuts too deep!
IIRC ali shoud be bead blasted, NOT
sand or grit. The ali will disappear

You "should" bead blast
but ive sand blasted it and it was fine, the grit was old and i kept plenty of distance
I find that glass bead gives a very nice, mellow finish to alluminium and doesnt make the surface rough like alluminium oxide grits or similar.
