how to "airbox"
tcr - 16/8/08 at 12:53 PM

has anyone made their own airbox for bike carbs iv been told the pipercross px600 filter i have on is pants but i dont want to shell out another £190 on the px600 airbox so how do i go about making my own cheaper version?

R1 Pete made a clever airbox from an exhaust can he's got picture in his archive i think

i'm considering something a little more simple for mine. basically though, exhaust can is your airbox, and you stick a big K&N filter on the end

HMMM thats got me thinking and iv got a spare stainless can now aswel

petes one had all kinds of removable panels and bolts together. my idea was to cut 4 holes in the can, and fit to the carbs silicone to seal any joints (basically. i've got some adapter thingys for my carbs which make the whole thing very easy) blank off one end of the can, and the other end with part of the exhaust pipe is where the filter goes. should be pretty easy

thats wot i was thinking but the full width of the can wont fit under the bonnet

blakep82 - 16/8/08 at 01:12 PM

i guess you could always cut it in half, and weld a flat sheet of stainless to the opening. would that fit? that way you can send me the other half! no? not a good idea?
ha ha

something like this you mean

I had an airbox with one of them CBS air filter canisters on it... rooling road last Monday showed it all to strangling the engine and BB said a Pipercross one would be much better.

This is how it is at the mo the filter gets squashed as it is so may need to cut bonnet for an air box

Do a search for posts by me on the subject. I built one a while back. I think I posted the details on how to design one too. Get it right and it will improve the performance of your engine and keep the noise down. Get it wrong and you can loose lumps of torque at the bottom end and plenty of power at the top.

Like this

A few hours , just cut a template for the TB's mouths.

The tube is a bit of 3" plastic waste which goes down the front to a big K&N cone filter off Ebay for £5. Rescued attachment Inlet_plenum_RHS.JPG

Here's mine, now has a single bolt down the middle holding the ends on, so no visible fixings..... Rescued attachment 2airbox3.jpg

have you got any side pics and how do you fix the box to the backplate?

eznfrank - 16/8/08 at 05:42 PM

I'd be interested in the old PX if you wanted to sell it?

airbox mk1 (the first attempt)
this is what we used

inlet side

other end blanked off

with filter

MightySprocket - 22/10/08 at 07:31 AM

is it possible to run bike carbs without a filter at all? as you can with DCOEs for example

One of the quickest ways to wreck your bores . Use a decent filter

oops forgot to update pics
homemade carbon backplate

airbox mounted to backplate using rivited alley angle

and mounted on pipercross backplate on car

Jacko has some pics of his in archive. I think bigrich made an airbox too.

Not sure if triton once had a mould - if not him was someone similar.

I remember seeing a piper air box at a show a couple of years back. Were quite expensive but didnt look like much to them.

This is the one Triton did - Here.

I posted in the thread and sent him a PM, but never heard anything back from him.
