can't be doing with fannying about with elecrolysis

whats the name of the stuff you put on and it reverses rust? someone made a post about it a few weeks back?

Mollasses....

I'm in the middle of doing a Locostbuilders experiment using the wonderful chelating properties of this.... (due to the prescense of IIRC hyroxamine acids).

I've taken the before photos and the rusty wishbone nuts have been suspended in a 10:1 solution for 24 hours and they're almost back to clean shiny metal (they were bright orange beforehand)....

I should have the experiment finished in 48 hours and will publish the results....

Malt vinegars good too - ust leave the items submersed for a few days and give a going over with a toothbrush or paintbrush every now and then to get the loose surface 'slime' out of the way.

I left my caliper brackets in for four or five days, rinsed the bad stuff away every day with water and put back in. After five days there was very litle rust - soaked them in water for a while, then put them i the gas barbeque for 10 minutes to get all of the water out of the porous metal, which left an orange haze on the surface, which came off with a going over with the wire wheel.

I just put them straight on the car with no painting, but in hindsight I should have primed and painted them

treacle is molases isn't it? mmm, interesting. so its a 10:1 solution, is it a soluition with water?

i'll get started on it myself if its working!

its only some light surface rust i've got really, but its isude a pretty small tube which is to complete my intake manifold, so i'd like it clean. running some sandpaper in there should sort it right enough, but its tight for space in there

Black treacle is a mixture of mollasses and golden syrup (IIRC about 50/50) but the best stuff to use is plain (Blackstrap) mollasses. My local corner shop had a big tin of the "Epicure" variety in the baking section for a whole £1.39.... I bet it'd be cheaper in the supermarket.
If you used black treacle you might have to use a more concentrated solution.... and it is water used to dilute the mollasses (strangely because you'd think it would cause rusting quicker than the mollases could chelate it!!)...
