So I've sorted the booting problem - thanks guys, and set the BIOS to auto detect slave primary HDD and it sees the new HDD.

But when I fire up the machine the new drive isn't visible, what have I missed?

You need to assign it a drive letter/format it with the disk management tool in administrative tools in control panel

Does that make sense?

Did it go through the find new harware wizzard on firts boot ???

if yes then ricght click on the "my computer" icon and left click manage.
in the left hand window clcik on disk managment. you may get a new signiture wizzard come up.. just keep clicking next until you get to finish.

on the right you will see all the hard drives including you new one. ricght click this and select create new partition.

Use windows Help, all the info is in there.

Just make sure you're on the desktop and press F1 for windows help. Type in 'install a new drive' and follow the instructions.
