Ivan - 4/9/09 at 05:20 PM

Desktop started to slow down as usual after heavy data and grahics work - re booted and no hard drive.

Drive spins up but no data access - even testing on another at the computer repair shop - hey ho of to the data recovery firm we go. #$ck

I feel for you.

I've just had to get a new hard drive fitted to my laptop.

Luckily all the company data is backed up on the server and then backed up to a tape drive.

Only lost my photos / uni work, which the data recovery managed to get back (all 11 gig of it!).

Yea = I've got 750 Gig of data to recover - although a lot is backed up it will need major work to rebuild everything.

The realy anoying thing is that I bought the new 1Tb drive at the beginning of the year and Seagate tell me the guarentee is null & void if you send the drive for data recovery if they touch the drive with a screwdriver - otherwise if you send it to them they will replace the drive but keep your one with all the data on it so the choice is yours - pay for drive and get data recovered or get free drive and loose all data.

put it in a plastic bag and stick it in the freezer overnight.
pull it out of the freezer and image the drive immediatly.
you got a 1 in 4 chance that you'll recover all the data before it dies permenantly

Thanks - will try that when I have bought a new drive.
