OT - dds3 backup tapes ?
mcerd1 - 22/9/09 at 03:12 PM

I'm having some trouble at work, we need to get some old files (10+ years) off the old backup tapes.
and after a bit of swearing I've managed to get one of the old PC's up and running Win2K with a SCSI dds 3 drive.

but it won't recognize the tapes so I'm assuming that they were done with some 3rd party software
The tapes were done on an old server which we no longer have (or at least it doesn't work) and it used to run win server 2k

Anyone know how to get the files off these tapes ?

What software have you put back on the server? Backup Exec?

Are you confident the drive works as it should? Will it read a new fresh tape?

I've just stuck the drive in an existing win2K machine (as it happened to have SCSI already setup)
its just an old desktop so its got no special software, just what comes with win2K

I've not found a blank tape to try yet but I'm fairly sure the drive works

trouble is I've no idea what software was on the old server

I'd hedge my bets on Backup Exec. I'd doubt very much that they would be relying on NTBackup.

edit to add 60 Day free trial.....

It could be Arcserve also... I think it may have been called something different back then, unfortunately the old name eludes me.
If you're really unlucky it could have been something like stac replica, which was great at the time but I doubt you'll get hold of it now...
