OT connecting 2 pc on network - I give up :(
mcerd1 - 12/3/10 at 09:01 PM

I'm tring to connect my old laptop (XP home) to my new desktop (win7 pro) so that I can transfer a load of files

both machines are set to the same workgroup

if I plug them both into the hub the win XP machine can see the win 7 one but can't access it

if I plug them together directly its the same, but the win 7 one can see an unidentified public network

any ideas ? (before I rip the laptop HDD out and stick in the USB thingy)

on the machine you want to transfer files from, dont you have to enable the file sharing of the folder(s)? right click, properties and should see option for file sharing.

done on both of them

you also have to go along to the next tab called security and allow access to user EVERYONE.

also done

have you tried making sure that you have identical user accounts with the same passwords on both machines?

didn't think that made any odds - but as it happens they are the same

Allowed file and printer sharing in the firewall settings? Or is the firewall disabled?

mcerd1 - 12/3/10 at 09:55 PM

thats got it
I'd changed some of the firewall settings but there are loads of them on win7....

at least with the 2 machines connected directly the win 7 one can now see the shared folders on the xp one

but it still doesn't work the other way round or when its going through the hub

do you need to log in to the hub and change any settings in there to do with file sharing?

Would lay odds you still have a firewall or sharing issue then....

Try typing

net view \<hostname>

on the Windows 7 box, replacing <hostname> with the actual name of the box. You should get something like this...if you don't then you're not sharing anything...if you do, then it's most likely a firewall issue.

e.g.
C:>net view \mymachine
Shared resources at \mymachine

Dining Room PC

Share name Type Used as Comment

------------------------------------------------------------
Lacie750G Disk
Printer Print Microsoft XPS Document Writer
Printer3 Print HP LaserJet 1018
Printer4 Print EPSON Stylus COLOR 580
SharedDocs Disk
The command completed successfully.
