Ive just realised my dad had a VGA cable lying around, and i wanted to see if it would work with my laptop. So i plugged it in and hey presto i have 2 screens, my laptop screen and my TV screen.

this is really handy as when im at uni i use my laptop to watch TV on (so i can watch freeview). But i was thinking i can take my TV with me aswell, plug my laptop in and watch the TV on the bigger screen, and still use my laptop to browse great sites like this and that all works fine.

The only problem is that the sound only goes through the laptop, and not through the TV. Which is quite strange because i have the laptop on my lap right in front of me and the TV a couple meters away so it sounds wierd. Anyway i can put the sound through the TV?

You can take the sound out of the headphone socket on the laptop and plug it into the audio in on the tv.

Is there not a headphone out jack on the laptop somewhere that you can cable up to the tv's audio in?

hhmmm didnt think about that, will see if i can find a long cable to fit

nope cant seem to make that work, i then tried connecting the two with an HDMI cable, but didnt get anything wheni tried that,

Any ideas?

What make/model of TV?

BenB is right - there is normally a 3.5mm jack next to the VGA connector for audio in.

If your laptop has an HDMI connection then it's probably just a case of enabling it. This may have to be done in the BIOS, and/or may be a setting in the Display Adapter Driver.

Depending on the version supported by your laptop, the HDMI may or may not carry sound. If it does, you may need to select it in the laptop's audio drivers.
