Readyboost
Ninehigh - 5/7/11 at 05:45 PM

I know how the readyboost works (use the space on a usb stick etc as a pagefile/virtual memory) but I was mildly surprised to find the option on a SD card... It did say, however, that the card wasn't fast enough to boost performance. Then it hit me, there's high speed ones (for HD video capture and such iirc) I wonder if they're fast enough. This is of course provided I can find one cheaper than a normal ram upgrade mind...

Anyone think it would be worth it?

Thanks in advance

Having used it on a few pc's....I'd say it's pretty useless. RAM is very cheap these days and in my opinion there's no substitute for it!

what kind of RAM do you need ?

(I've got loads of old stuff and some newer ones dowing nowt here)

if your using a 32 bit machine it could give a small benefit as your limited to 4GB ram anyway (less if on XP, though it will still report 4GB).

this 4GB limit applies to the flashdrive your using as well if i remember correctly (on 32bit machines)

The 4GB limit on flash drives is simply because they are formatted with FAT32, and this is a limitation of the filing system (not 32/64 bit OS dependant). You can format them to NTFS and remove this limitation, but then they won't work in cameras etc. and the NTFS filing system puts more wear on the flash.

Re. Readyboost, not only is the speed of the card important, the speed of your card reader can also make a big difference. As said, more RAM is a better route to more performance, especially with memory hogs like Vista.

Fair dos, just thought it was an idea. The ram I'd need is DDR2 PC2-5300 at 333mhz DDR2 667. I think last time I looked 4Gb was about £50... No idea if I can go better or faster that's what's in there now in a single gigabyte flavour

you'd need to check your motherboards spec

I've just ckecked my stocks and it looks like I'm all out of DDR2's (someone took my last ones a few weeks back)
but I'm sure someone else on here will have what you need...
