Repairing an avi file?
RazMan - 14/12/06 at 08:09 AM

I've got a 700Mb avi file which refuses to play in Media Player or Nero Showtime. I get this message

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

Is there any way I can modify or repair this file?

No... I've had a few and tried to no avail.

It may not be broken, just recorded with a different codec such as DivX?
Try it with another player there are plenty to download.

Download VLC player its free and its played everything that Ive thrown at it. Unless the file you have is compressed, if so you can use WINRAR to uncompress.

I highly reccomend VLC player, it will play any avi file, it hasn't failed me in about 2 years.

If it won't play in VLC then it is probally too far gone to repair

Still no joy - it is a file which was uncompressed from a rar file. I reckon it is either a fake file or simply too damaged to play with anything.

swmbo tells me the movie is on the cinema circuit this week so it looks as if I will have to waste some valuable garage time soon

Thanks for all the tips guys
