took my laptop to my girlfriends place last night, she's got wireless modem etc. switched it all on etc, now on my laptop it knows the signal is
there as it's in the list of connections but it's simply won't connect. it's showing perfect singnal strength and i can even
connect to a neighbours wireless with really weak signal.
any clues what to try?
she's on AOL if that makes any odds?
If you can see the connection you should be able to connect to it.
Is she using WEP or WPA encryption? Have you put in the correct key? Are you using the windows Zero config utility or the one from the adapter
manufacturer? Are you on the same wireless channel?
Some wireless modems/routers have in their config the ability to limit connections to specified MAC addresses only (the unique address on every network adaptor). It's a bit of a security thing. I configured mine like that once & then months later spent the evening pulling my hair out trying to get a new laptop to connect 'cos I'd forgotten about it. Either turn the feature off or add your MAC address (NOT IP ADDRESS) to it's list.
Check whether the laptop and router are both configured to use the same standard - either 2.11b or 2.11g.
A mismatch in driver software (one set to b only and the other set to g) will normally cause this
also check whether theres a pairing button on the wifi box which needs to be pressed to allow the box to accept new pairings
FWIW - I have the same problem.
MAC address is entered on the router correctly, signal is strong, router banding is set correct, banding is correct the Laptop see's the router
but wont connect.
I just re-installed all my drivers/software on the laptop and PC upgraded the router software but still no network or internet on the Laptop.
BL00DY COMPUTERS!
BTW - I am running Windows Vista but that should not matter to the router.
I'll keep you posted!
Steve
well i'm kinda glad to see i'm not the only 1 having problems then!
have tried changing her router between b and g but my laptop has both so shouldn't matter. tried changing the channel but again makes no
difference, never had to do anything before to get my laptop to connect no matter where i've been.
just can't understand how it can be showing up on the list of connections as being there with perfect strength yet won't connect, it says
it's trying to but then fails. tried with no security turned on, tried with wpa then wpe and nothing makes the slightest difference.
annoying!
