IE problems/virus
bigrich - 1/7/07 at 10:04 PM

my bothers haveing problems with his pc, if he trys to get on locostbuilders the page is blank as if IE cant find the page, this happens through google or from links on another site to locost.
if he clicks on an item on ebay to look at it brings up a page saying the item has been removed but the number dosnt relate to the item your trying to look at, and not to pay via great western bank or something. his antivirus says theres nothing wrong but wont update itself also tried to download avg 4 times and each time it says it has corupt files and wont install. we suspect a virus as it happened after trying to download a screensaver. tried the go back function but that wont work either. any ideas guys as its a bit out of my depth/knowledge

You might be able to use one of these online scanners but that might nit works either.

Also worth downloading Microsoft defender it can pick up a lot of stuff, if you have to downlaod on another machines and put it on a cd of memory stick.

These types of thing are a pain and if you not that hot on a PC things like looking in the registry for doddy things might be a sten to far.

i have run a copy of my AVG to a cd to see if we can install it that way. the registry is a mystery to me so i hope we can sort it without haveing to go in there

Panda's Nanoscan is pretty good.

Sounds more like a DNS problem or TCP/IP stack problem than a virus.
Before doing anything from "Run" on the start menu type in
ping locostbuilders.co.uk

If all is OK You should see something like this
64 bytes from www.locostbuilders.co.uk (84.234.16.100): icmp_seq=10 ttl=59 time=27.8 ms
64 bytes from www.locostbuilders.co.uk (84.234.16.100): icmp_seq=10 ttl=59 time=27.8 ms
64 bytes from www.locostbuilders.co.uk
(84.234.16.100): icmp_seq=10 ttl=59 time=27.8 ms

If that dosen't work try

ping 84.234.16.100

you should see
PING 84.234.16.100 (84.234.16.100) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 84.234.16.100: icmp_seq=1 ttl=59 time=28.2 ms
64 bytes from 84.234.16.100: icmp_seq=2 ttl=59 time=27.9 ms
64 bytes from 84.234.16.100: icmp_seq=3 ttl=59 time=27.7 ms
64 bytes from 84.234.16.100: icmp_seq=4 ttl=59 time=27.3 ms
64 bytes from 84.234.16.100: icmp_seq=5 ttl=59 time=26.7 ms
64 bytes from 84.234.16.100: icmp_seq=6 ttl=59 time=27.5 ms

--- 84.234.16.100 ping statistics ---
6 packets transmitted, 6 received, 0% packet loss, time 5012ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 26.767/27.594/28.255/0.496 ms

If this works but the first didn't the computer isn't getting a DNS service from the ISP's server.

If it was the DNS it would effect all websites not just locostbuilders.

I'd try clearing all temp files and cache from IE. Also do a disk clean-up from the system tools, then try the AVG update again.

it may have dns cached causing some sites to work and some not to, as said above, try ping locostbuilders.co.uk and it that doesnt work then the IP.

try opening a command windows and typing nslookup then locostbuilders.co.uk ad see if it answeres with addresses, it could be a routing problem with your isp
