SWMBO has just informed me that the disc I burned the other day holding all the baby pictures is corrupt. I formatted the harddrive after I burned it (due to a new motherboard installation, replacing a faulty one).

Have I lost them? Or is there a way to get the lost files BACK off the cd?

It will probably depend on the definition of "corrupt".

It could just be the cdrom's got dusty or oily!!

Is it the same computer? If it's a different computer maybe it'll be okay on the computer that burn it?

same pc, new motherboard. not dusty or oily - i popped it straight into a case, which she just took it out of.

my bet is that she put it in upsides down

I've used it with reasonable success in the past. Best of luck mate. I have had a couple of nights in the spare room as a result of similar situations...

Did you just do the normal xp install format or did you delete the partitions and recreate new partitions and then format that, if it's the first option I may be able to help.

I saved a friends photos yesterday on his computer. They were gone, no where to be found. But he hadnīt formatted his drive though.

But I used GetDataBack for NTFS 3.3 (his drive was a NTFS partition)

I found the program and unlock file at piratebay.org

Try it in a different computer before you fork out.

I'll try it on my laptop when I get in. Then I'll try the program that has been linked to (thanks for that!) then I'll send it off.

I used vista's inbult burning software to make the disc, and I deleted the partition and reformatted twice - due to a cock up! So I am sure there will be next to nothing on the HDD left.

CD recovery for Ģ150 is the best I've found so far.

Well I'm not sure I'd be wanting to stretch to 150 notes, but if you do take it somewhere then it's someone else's fault if it doesn't work and you are slightly let off the hook if you know what I mean

Don't think you'll get anything off the hard drive, my advice would try the cd in as many different brands of cd/dvd drives until hopefully one works, sometimes if the cd recorder is a bit weak and then the reader is also a bit weak it can't read but sometimes a nice new cd reader will just because the laser has a bit more power and this does vary between brands. Hope you get it sorted.

You *might* be able to get something off the drive, depending on the format. If Windows hasn't re-used old areas of the drive, the content of the files might still be there, although their allocation information has gone. There are free disk tools which can find files after a delete / reformat, have a search on the net for them.

There was a disk recovery place I used with work who did recovery on a no win / no fee basis (they weren't successful, but that was cos the heads had been scraping on the disk platters).

Apart from that, you'll have to hope that you can get something off the CD. it is possible - I worked on the Helpdesk at Uni, and one student came in on the day their dissertation was due in, with it on one floppy, which was just chucked into their bag.....

A word to everyone - CDs aren't infallible and they're quite fragile - I wouldn't trust my only copy of something important to one when they cost about 5p to buy - and always verify that they've burned properly and you can read the data off them again.

I've used this to recover files successfully from a CD which I could not read. I think mine was unreadable due to a multisession burning/reading problem but this worked well and is around $30. (The CD recovery software is what you're looking for on the link)

Have a go with this before handing over any cash. It's slow but free and if it doesn't work then nothing lost. If you need help please get in touch and I'll try it on one of our many machines at work.

Vista is quite good at corrupting files, their are a few hotfixes for this problem and they have been included in vista sp1 released on the 18/3/08 more info can be found HERE not much help now but may expalin why your files got knackered in the first place.
Hopfully it's just a weak burn though and you'll get them read and dropped onto a disk somehow.

You could also try taking the cd into somewhere like Jessops and seeing if it will work in their machines.

BTW the photos aren't still on the camera are they?
