Acer will cover that budget range.

just make sure whatever you get has microsoft office on it unless you have office install discs.

works will soon get infuriating if she needs to use one thing at school and another at home.

i've been very happy with my dell. i paid £600, but it's pretty high spec. runs solidworks effortlessly. have a look at dell small business section. everything's a bit sleeker and a bit cheaper than the home section. the business warranty looks much more promising than the home one.

finally, if you have the option of vista or xp pro, get xp.

Friend of mine has just told me he's got a rather nice spec Acer from Tesco for £450 (£405 if you can find someone with an employee discount!)

12" dual core, 120gb HDD, 2gb ram

Spec is OK for the price, but the 12.1" screen would be the decider for me, very compact

how about an Acus eee PC? they look to be excellent value and small so easy for kids to hump around. Also they run Linux and come pretty fully loaded with software for most purposes. There is also a very good forum support site:

Must admit I can second the EEE PC, I'm selling my 7" in favour of a 9" version!

As I understand it the 9" version comes with Windoze

I use an Asus which I bought from http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/ and received good service and waranty cover.
