I've taken out my engine for a complete rebuild and was also thinking of cleaning up the engine bay now that its empty. My chassis has some light surface rust in some areas that have been hit with a spanner one too many times... to clean it up should I just sand and repaint it over with hammerite or is there another option?

Nothing else you can do really, you cant easily powder coat it, you can't zinc dip it
So Hammeright is probably the best thing to do as it is more durable than can paint.
For a better look i always use smoothright, you can also give it a second coat after 4 hours.

Black chassis paint would be the best choice Link

Black gloss, as in house paint is my prefered paint IMO hammerite is crap, its to flakey and chips very easily

I was give this tip by the local car restore's as normal black gloss is way way cheaper than chassis paint

POR 15 would be my own paint of choice.

Another for Por15... a bit more pricey, a bit more messy, but boy is it good stuff!

Second black gloss, it says flexible.. But if your going back to metal you will need a primer (Zinc 182 etc) and undercoat, and the gloss top coat.. But that should do you.. I would then run over the tubes with a rag and some waxoyl after for added protection.

I used acid #8 (I think that's it's name), acid etch primer, fantastic stuff but it may react with the exiting coating..

Prime the bare metal with a good primer, red oxide works well as it is also a fairly soft paint. Don't forget to sand down the existing coating to remove the sharp edges where the paint has chipped. Cheers Ray
