I've decided to make new mudguards so they fit neatly but how much clearance should I have?

I thought of allowing 15mm clearance over the wheel radius when I make the moulds but is this too close? I only drive on tarmac roads so I'm not worried about stones getting caught but don't know if the mudguards will get sucked in or out with aero.

Any opinions? Would you return the outer edges to stiffen the mudguards or is it not needed?

We had +1" on diameter and +1/2" on either side.

I kept mine close as I want to go down a size on the tyres when these are done.


Around 20mm max and its a pain in the ..... to get the wheels back on.

Hmm! Good point about getting the wheels back on I had not thought of that.

Any reason why the lip on the outside can't go outwards rather than inwards to make wheel fitting easier? Might look a bit strange but there are stranger aero mudguards about I suppose.

Are you ever going to have to trailer the car or get it transported? Reason I ask, they need to get the straps over the wheels but under the wings.

I was going to say I stick the tie downs thro' the holes in the wheels but I've just changed down to 13" wheea and there is only 3mm between the rims and the calipers now so I prob will not be able to.

that shouldn't be an issue, just thread the end of the strap through between tyre and arch, round the back then back out again, rather than trying to put it ready looped over the top of the wheel.
