Sourcing sheet steel
Philbo - 28/3/03 at 10:19 AM

I've purchased a chassis but need some sheet steel to finish off various jobs (footwells, bracing, other stuff).

Stupid question, but I'm having trouble finding anyone who can sell me some 16swg steel and ali! I've looked for "metal merchants" and "steel wholesalers" but they don't do that sort of thing. Who or what should I be looking for? I'm assuming that the weight and bulk of these things would mean that the cost of mail order would greatly outweigh the cost of the item itself.

D'oh! (slaps forehead)

Picked up a sheet of 8' and 4' 16 gauge ali from a local body and coachwork repair place for about £40. Got them to chop it up on their guillotine and shoved it in the back of my car.

look for steel stockholders.

where i live at leat two companies deliver steel to yer door for 15 quid, as does an alu supplier.

If you give em time and ask nicely, they can cut it to order.

I can even buy low volume (40 quid and up) steel from my local corus steel shop! look that up in yer local directory....

I don't know where you are in the country, but you could try Metal Supermarkets

If you are lucky enough to be within reasonable range of one of these places then they can be very useful for bits & pieces. A bit more expensive than a wholesaler, but at least you can buy only what you need.

Thanks for the info chaps. Found a local supplier who reluctantly agreed to flog me the smallest piece he would deal with, 2x1m. That's a lot more than I need, but it's only costing £26+VAT so wth.

I got some 8'x4' 1.2mm for £18+VAT from Barrett Steel in Bradford.

I got some 1.6mm too but I can't find the reciept for that It was a smaller piece and also cost less.

I got some dexion shelving from the scrapyard, they told me to take what I wanted. It's good stuff, 16g and it's a pity I didn't want more of it. Not big enough for a floor panel but spot on for tunnel sides and battery shelf.

yours, Pete.
