pu adhesive and aluminium
jabbahutt - 31/10/07 at 08:02 AM

Morning all

Quick question. Will PU adhesive bond aluminium to fibreglass well. I need in a couple of places to bond small non load bearing brackets to the inside of the fibreglass and wondered if PU would do the job okay.

Many thanks
Nigel

Probably. I might try fibreglass resin.

(wondering what a non load-bearing bracket would be for )

My cycle wings are bonded to the powerder coated wing stays and have stayed put for 2 years now. It sticks to GRP very well.

My floor is PUed and riveted on and it hasn't come off either.

As long as it's the proper stuff it should be fine... There's PU and PU

Strangely Tigerflex is listed as a sealant but is a very good adhesive. Usually it's the other way round- some adhesives are better used only as sealants!!! I like the proper Sikaflex (can't remember to code number though!!)...

PU is practically designed for the job as it is flexible and won't break at the join (resin is too brittle for disimilar joins)

For a really strong bond I have found that windscreen adhesive is by far the best. Wurth make it I think.

If you use wurth adhesive then use gloves otherwise you will have black fingers for weeks.
