its been mentioned a bit now about peoples wing stays starting to crack, which can potentially lead to all sorts of brown trouser moments should they
snap off whilst driving.
after 600ish miles of driving mine have stress fractured on both wing stays from the amount they wobble when driving.
so last night i ground out the cracks, and welded them back up again. As well as doing this i made some brackets that will help to stop the wings
wobbling so much:
They are made from 30mm x 3mm flatbar cut at 200mm long. There is a 90deg bend 30mm in with a 14mm hole punched in it. 40mm up from the bend there
is a slight bend, and then 135mm up from the 90 bend i have curved the bar to fit inside the profile of the wing.
i then sprayed it black, and bonded it onto the inside of the with tigerseal.
I have just come back from an 80 mile drive on the bumpy county roads, and i have to say there is a massive difference to the amount of movement in
the wings they barely move at all when you hit a big lump or pot hole
if anyone needs any more info/pics then then me know
r ur normal stays not strong enough?
thats a nice neat solution there - though i've never had a problem with my mk wing stays.
Thanks Dave.
I'll get on and make some before the cracks appears in mine.
Rob
