MNR vortx - advice for a newbie
aka_shortie - 5/12/10 at 10:07 PM

Hi guys, im after some of your advice / experiences.

Im looking to build a lotus 7 type kit car and i really like the look of the MNR vortex, luv the front nose and the lack of stainless trim.

The car will be 90% road use with the odd track day etc.

Here are my build requirements:

1. Budget of 10k.

2. Once completed and SVA'd, i want to ensure it is a brand new current reg plate. (So from what i have read, every single part needs to be brand new with the exception of one major component that can be reconditioned to "as new condition" - i.e. the engine).

3. Really like the look of a full cage so thats on the list lol.

4. What engine should i go with, bike or car? Im thinking sub 5 sec 0-60 if that is realistic on my budget.

5. How hard are they to get SVA'd / IVA'd.

So, do you think it is possible and as anyone got any tips/advice/decent build threads i can look through.

Thank you

Good choice mate, Marc and Chris and his team will treat you well, heard nothing but good things about them.

£10k is well do able, see if you can blag a ride in a cec and bec and decide, its horses for courses with that mate.

They've put a few through the new IVA so they should be able to advise you.

Cheers

Rich

Oh and welcome to the madhouse!

1... sounds reasonable.
2... all correct but there are pro's and cons for Q, age related and new plates.
3... Bike engine... but that part probably condems this thread into getting bogged down by the two camps arguing about it.
4... Not easy but OK if you follow the manual.

Im sure i read that a Q plate will knock up to 15% off the resale value as compare to a new reg.

Whats the best way to decide between the 2 types of engine

Get a good length ride or better still a drive in both.

Something to factor in with BEC and IVA is the requirement to fit a reversing capability. I believe MNR do their own box which seems well respected - it can add a chunk of cost to th build though which you may not have factored in.

Also to consider with BEC is the need to get the right ratio diff for the particular engine you select. Some (no idea which) need the lower ratio diffs (3.14:1 or 3.38:1). These are sought after and rare, therefore again they can add a chunk of possibly un factored cost to a BEC build.

IMHO a £10k build budget should see you with a very nicely spec'd car - enjoy!

Possibly does make a small difference but I doubt it's that much but it will cost more to build as well. Mine is on a new reg though.

Get a ride in a BEC and then after about 30seconds you'll know what you want. Search "BEC v CEC" and you'll retuyrn 100's of threads with basically 3 opinions; 1 BEC is best, 2 CEC is best, 3 Try both and decide for yourself.

As the guys all say I cant praise mnr enough
The have helped me through my build and there advice and help was invaluable Chris is a pro with all the paper work my car has just passed iva and us now on a 60 plate my advice is go see Chris and mark and look at the quality that they turn out in every car!
and get Chris to run through the prices with you there cars have exelent resale value wich is also important when parting with 10k

You can take a look at my build in my blog underneath but it's a long way away from complete! I can also u2u the build diary from my last Mnr if you want a look through it. I am on my second Mnr now and third kit. The first and second were bec but my new one has full cage and Honda s2000 power.I bought a cat d Honda s2000 and stripped it of parts; and sold the rest

As Gavin mentioned, MNR will be at the Autosport show, and my new creation will be on their stand, so if you go, pop in and say hello.
