Need some steel to fab a petrol tank.

How thick and where from please peeps?

1.2mm - any steel stockholder...

18g in English money is plenty thick to weld and sturdy enough not to buckle. Any stock holder should have it in.

I used 0.9. welded a treat.

1mm thick mild steel is fine for making a tank. It is easy to cut and fold.

It's a good idea to include a baffle in the tank and this can be spot welded in. A good way to make the ends of the tank is to cut from 15mm ply a former, well two actually and sandwich the steel between the two. The steel needs to be half an inch bigger all round. Clamp it all up together and tap the edges over to a right angle. These ends will slot into the end of your folded "Tank" and can be either gas or TIG edge welded. MIG is not great for this application because of tiny pinholes. Before welding the ends in they can be located by spot welding at intervals.

I used 16g steel for mine.I bought it from
metal supermarkets on the team valley and he even cut it to size for me.
It cost me the princely sum of £20.
