megatune basics

Hi

I am trying to get a megasquirt running on my silvertop zetec

all connected and responds to the notebook, I can see the temp gauges and I have configured the TPS.
I have a zetec map , and I have tried other ford maps, but I cannot get the megasquirt to detect theat the engine is turning.

I have removed VR sensor and checked it works, and I can detect a small voltage on a multimeter when I turn the motor by hand.

This is what I am expecting to happen, the red and green dots at the bottom of the megatune display should light up or am I wrong.

also my fuel pump should switch on when it detects motor turning.

Initially when power applied to Msquirt the pump runs for a short period.

Any thoughts welcome

If ignition is via an EDIS then check that the VR is connected the correct way round, it won't spark otherwise.

cheers

sorry forgot to say, it a unit build by diyautotune MS1 v3 board using VB921 to drive the coils.

does the fuel pump light on megatune flash??
Oh and what code are you using??

nope have not noticed that flashing,

Is there supposed to be any visual indication in megatune that motor is turning, other than rev counter

piddy - 30/12/06 at 07:20 PM

Did you test the megasquirt on a stimulator first?

andrenel - 30/12/06 at 07:28 PM

no dont have a stim, unit was built by DIYautotune

Code version I am using is
029t downloaded this morning from ms extra
burnt firmware to ecu as I did not know what was in there.

msn-extra.ini.029r is the code I activated in the configurator

Not really, if you're not seeing any rpm in the realtime display then it's not getting a signal. You can try taking a log while you crank the engine to check if you are getting anything at all.

As has been mentioned, first thing i'd do is swap over the two VR sensor wires and see what happens.

paulf - 30/12/06 at 07:41 PM

Might be worth checking even with the sensor direct to the megasquirt, the polarity definitely matters with the Edis and most likely is the same when interfaced to the megasquirt.
It may be worthwhile swapping the wiring around to rule it out.

I tried the trigger logger in megatune,

Changed the setting in Crogram FilesMegaSquirtMegaTune2.25mtCfg
msn-extra.ini
set LOGPAGES ; set to enable 11 pages for trigger/tooth logging

while cranking the motor hit fetch a couple of timesall I see is Hex 00

I still dont know if its the sensor oe the ECU that is not behaving.

When mine is "cranking" on the stim (i.e. ive got the rpm set below 300) the injector firing light (LED nearest the diagnostic connector) flickers on the side of the case: this should be your clue that MS is trying to light the fire.

Cheers guys

Partial success
It was traced to the trim pots inside the Megasquirt. a pair of blue pots on the PCB, each with a wheel like a screw head.
I needed to adjust the VR sensitivity.

I now have spark and a RPM reading in megatune, don’t seem to be getting any fuel through to the injectors though, I suspect the pressure in fuel line as the problem, as I am using the stock pump from my donor ( Scorpio)

Here's an article on how to adjust the trim pots:

If the donor had fuel injection then the pump should be up to it, many people use the Bosch type pumps from a sierra etc.
Is the pump operating at all ? if so maybe there is a pressure reg problem .

yeap the pump runs fine, It was quite late last night when i managed to get the VR sensor working, so have not done a detailed investigation yet.

will remove fuel hoses and check the supply. when I removed a s/plug to check for spark, i could not smell fuel from the pot, and the plugs were dry.

i guess if I remove the return hose from fuel rail and run the pump, if there is visable fuel comming out of the pressure regulator it should be OK.

Thanks

and wich limit have you set?
if your limit is set to lets say 700rpm
and while cranking with your almost flat bat you get 300 then ther won't happen very much.

saying that that if it sparks it could be well trying to light the fire.

Tks

have you wired the fuel pump the right way round..........

sounds daft but common mistake!

It still buzzes nicely but won't pump much backwards!

andrenel - 19/1/07 at 09:12 PM

thanks guys
she is running, starts on first turnover, very rich at the moment.

Black soot on the wall opposit exhast outlet when a gave her a bit of gas

will spend the weekend trying to get her to run a bit better.

Not to sure how to approach the tuning but will do some more reading

Need some kind of road area where I can drive her, not sure how to go about this as she has not been near an sva .
