After scouring the net a light brown buttoned unit seems to be most widely used.

First of all are you intending using LED indicators anywhere?

I used just a standard flasher, so I will look on the VWP website for you.

no LED's
ive got all std lights all round allready, i like the word standard but in the VWP cat there are a choice of 3, RFL3 (3 pins on the back) RFL5 (4 pins on the back) and RFL9 (3 pins on the back but a different config to RFL3)

The RFL4 will be fine for you.

Thats the electro-mechanical relay.
Do you know what the difference is between an 'electro-mechanical' and an 'electronic' relay are?

i would guess electro mechanical ones are full of electro magnets pulling metal conacts together etc, and electronic will be transistors etc, so no moving parts.
