I have a crossflow with a Lucas alternator. The alternator light only goes out after i rev the car past 3000 rpm. It then stays off.

Why does it need to rev so high for it to go out? What do i need to fix?

I queried this with my local auto-electicians and evidently, this is quite normal for that alternator. Certainly mine always needed a good blip on the throttle to encourage the light to go out.They also told me that this is an old fashioned alternator and that there are modern and more eficient replacements available. I did in fact replace mine with a 70 Amp model and this did not need the blip to extinguish the light.

ps I have the standard alternator available for a small sum.

the old style Lucas alternator need a blip on for them to kick in; usually about 1,500 rpm. 3,000 is a bit high but nothing to worry about - do you have undersize alternator pulley?

Would a smaller pulley not need less revs?
