Have you checked for voltage from the feed to the pump?

If it is at fault it may also be fused or could be a broken cable.

If you have voltage then check the earth.

Agreee.

And if there is no voltage, is there any kind of safety interlock to stop the fuel pump if the bike goes on it's side etc?

So it came to a "full stop"?

Not sure whether the carbed R1 has a tilt switch but that could be it. Then time to get the wiring diagram and multimeter out. Fuses and start relay are possible causes as is a loose connection between the bike loom and the extentions to the car.
