I had my car on charge over the winter, and when I came to try and start it, it was dead. The charger has is the trickle charge and maintenance type, but on looking it was set for motor cycle. It turns out one of the kids needed to charge his scooter and had used the charger then put it back without flipping the switch back.

The battery will not hold any charge has this killed it?

Stick on a proper low rate charge for 36 hrs and see what happens however even in the best scenario it will have taken damaged.

I did the same, check it with a multimeter to see if its just 6v. Mine assumed it was a 6v battery and I used my boost starter on the battery to fool it into going up to 12v.

Many thanks it is what I thought, time for a new battery. Still can't be cross with this kid as he is the quietest one of the bunch, But ... He has blown the engine on his scooter twice, bent the forks on his little brothers scooter. The eldest crashed his car on friday and then comes round to borrow the money to pay the excess, and to see if he can borrow a car to get his pregnant girlfriend to hospital if she goes into labour whilst he is getting his car fixed

What planet do kids live on today and these are the ones all our pensions depend upon ... Rant over

It may well be recoverable but it's probably not worth the effort if a decent 3+ stage charger charge doesn't keep it happy. As mentioned above smart chargers often won't try to charge a really flat set of cells so a jump from another running car for a couple of minutes should get it to a state the smart charger will start to function, if this is the problem.
