HELP....What have I done **NOW FIXED**
AndyW - 14/7/12 at 12:01 PM

Ok

The car was running fine. I just wired in the new Acewell dash, all worked fine. Took the dash off and disconnected all wires so I can shorten/ tidy them up. Now as soon as I connect the battery neg the starter solenoid spins?

I have made sure all the dash wires are not touching anything or grounding out and I cant find anything obvious.

Any one any idea where to look as it might be something easy that Im over looking.

Thats what you get for sneeking into the garage to work on the kit when I should be out in the pouring rain trying to fit a new turbo to SWMBO car

thanks

Andy

Is it a key'd ignition? push button start?
Is the button/key being pushed by a part of the dash that isnt located correctly?

sierra column with switch, even with the key out as soon as I hook up the battery it spins the solenoid?

have you wired up the relay for the starter motor inhibitor ?

AndyW - 14/7/12 at 12:56 PM

Yes Warren, relay wired up and was functioning as it should, as I said all was fine before, now I undid what I had added with regards to the dash and this problem has come up!

start by taking the relay out and see if it still spins. Check or change the relay.

Plug the dash back in and see if it still happens.

pull the solenoid wire off, then plug in a test lamp.

connect it all together, then start pulling fuses out one at a time till the light go's out, then you can at least begin tracing it to a single live feed wire.

And follow your solenoid wire back up into the dash testing any joints for power or a short (and checking for chafing) until you find out where its getting the spurious voltage from.

Its just a slow methodical process of elimination really, as if the solenoid is supplied by a relay, find out if the relay is faulty and if its not find out where the relay is getting a false signal from.

I will be checking the relay tomorrow so will let you know what I find

It was a second hand starter and Im sure the terminal was abit loose when I got it. No chance of it breaking again as the JB weld has bade it very secure and I have put an isolator between the two terminals so the cant touch even if one was to break loose!
