The IVA manual seems a little vague on the subject and it has been mildly discussed on here (from search results I have found)
I am wiring my headlights and I can anybody clear up what is acceptable for the IVA.
This is how my car is currently wired:
Ignition off - Side lights can be switched on
Ignition on - Dip can be switched on, sides stay on with Dips on
Ignition on - Full beam (both on and flash) can be switched on, Sides and Dips stay on when Full beam is on. Full Beam telltale on
Ignition on - FOG works when both DIP and FULL are on but not sides. FOG telltale on
I think this is correct but I feel the fogs might have to come off when the full beam is on. Although this is where its a bit vague.
Cheers
Are your head dip/main seperate lamps or single lamps with twin filament bulbs? If they're twin filament bulbs then you need dip to go of when
main is on. Otherwise you'll overheat and blow the bulbs pretty quickly.
Not sure but I think fog can only come on with dip now.

My fronts are separate Dip, Beam and Sides. So I can hopefully leave them all on blaring away at the same time without heat issues. I don't have any front fogs or daytime running lights.
Just downloaded a new version of the IVA and it's a lot clearer than the older version I had (cheers Loggyboy). Seem I might have it correct and
there seems to be no requirements for dips turning off when the mains come on.
Front fogs seem a bit complex though - good job I don't have any.
this might help......
C+U regs
this bit is also interesting,
PART II
Requirements relating to optional dipped-beam headlamps
1. In the case of a vehicle with three or more wheels having a maximum speed exceeding 25 mph first used on or after 1st April 1991, two and not more
than two may be fitted and the only requirements prescribed by these Regulations in respect of any which are fitted are–
(a)those specified in paragraphs 2(c), 4, 7, 10 and 12(a) of Part I,
(b)that they are designed for a vehicle which is intended to be driven on the right-hand side of the road,
(c)that they form a matched pair, and
(d)that their electrical connections are such that not more than one pair of dipped-beam headlamps is capable of being illuminated at a time.
2. In the case of any other vehicle, any number may be fitted and the only requirements prescribed by these Regulations in respect of any which are
fitted are those specified in paragraphs 2(c), 4, 7 and 12(a) of Part I.
Whilst the C&U regs are fairly important, when it comes to IVA its irrelevant, the car will be tested to the manual.
For example, the C&U regs (and this is the only example I can think of off hand, im sure their are more) would allow you to have a light that
would show ANY colour of light to the front EXCEPT for red (ie wanker lights aka coloured washer nozzles). Where as for IVA it MUST only be white,
amber or yellow (depending on its function).
