electronic speedo

are there any electronic speedo's (i.e. not cable driven but use electical signals) that have the mechanical odomoeter mechanisms?

If so, is there a motor inside to drive the dials? (has to be surely....)

Slightly related but I'm wondering if I could drive my mechanical speedo with a motor (e.g. stepper motor) - a longshot perhaps but anyone heard/done this?

I've heard of this being done.... Use a hall effect transducer to drive a PWM stepper regulator, to turn a stepper at the right speed !

It was on an MG where they wanted to uprate the tranny and leave the dials, and I'm damned if I can find it !

Cheers
