I have not got room to fit my alternator in the usual place so i intend putting it in fron of the engine facing backwards.
Is there problems associated with doing this, due to thing running in the other direction.
Should i try and get an alternator that would normaly run in that direction?
If so, which one run the wrong way. ( i'm thinking older jap cars ?)
It's been done before, but I can't remember who by. AS you've assumed, as long as it spins in its intended direction then all will be well, although the bracket for it would need to be quite stiff and probably fairly big. You could use a "normal" one and a longer belt to wrap the now correct way round it, or use an idler wheel to alter it, or try an older Honda one, as they span the wrong way
Apparantly it doesn't make any difference if you spin it backwards....
It might make a difference if you have an old alternator with worn brushes but as said above they will charge in either direction.
Rotate the brushes?
As said an alternator is not directional. A dynamo is!
Get an alternator that is intended to be run in that direction as the brushed are normally offset.
How about cooling, the fan will be directional ?
Running the fan backwards will be very inefficient.
Alternator off a Honda-Rover (216Gsi or 416Gsi or 620) will do the trick

This is my solution.
The alt will run just as well forwards as backwards, cooling issues aside.
I'm hoping that the alt. will be relatively lightly loaded compared to the load from the donor car, so should'nt have any probs with
cooling.....
But if I do I'll just rearrange the fan set up.

Nice setup! I looked into making my alt run backwards but stoped as i was concerned about cooling, brushes etc.
I mounted my alt further up above my left cylinder bank.
