How do i have to wire low brake fluid meter?
marcotuinenburg - 18/10/07 at 09:02 PM

Hi,

Another question.
I would like to wire the low brakefluidlevel meter. It's from a Sierra but the Haynes manuel is too difficult for me to understand the wiring, there are no colours used.

There are 3 wires coming from the low brakefluidlevel meter coming.

Brown
Brown/yellow
Green/brown - direct to earth ???

I Have to wire it to a Fireblade looM.
Hope you guys can help me again with this.

Thanks, Marco

You will need to wire in a test switch to pass SVA.
Either use a handbrake switch as ^^^ or a switch on the dash, you can use something more funky but that's the minimum required.

you don't HAVE to have a red warning light for brake fluid?

sierra book shows:

brown - to ground (0v)
brown/yellow - to lamp
brown green - to hand brake switch

the two brown wires with tracer are connected together in the cap.

I have sierra master and using dvm find the conections not as per drawing - the h/b wire is the earth, the other two being common. (the seeds of doubt have been sown so I will retest ).

So check with meter or lamp as to how it is wired.

Basically in the cap there is a switch that maks contact betweeen all the wires if the fluid goes low.

so if the brown wire is 0V, connect one lead of a bulb to 12 V and other to say the brown/yellow.

the lamp lights when fluid is low.

now connect brown/green to one lead of handlbrake swith, the other lead to 0V. This will ground the bulb if
handbrake is on i.e. the bulb will light as the circuit is complete - also can be use to test the lamp.

Interesting, I believe the first test they do is to test the warning lamp by pulling off the cap.
This thread from 04 suggests that they accept the transparent reservoir as enough if you can see it while seated in the car

Not worth the risk IMO for the cost of a warning light, a switch and the appropriate reservoir cap.

2004 SVA manual doesn't even say you have to see it from the driving position. just that it has to be a trnsparent resevior.

nfauto.co.uk have some nice looking float switches anyway, not like those nasty rally design ones!

I drew this up a while back. Should be simple enough to understand.

Doesnt the sierra resevoir cap have a switch built in - press the yellow bit in the middle.

matt_claydon - 19/10/07 at 08:10 AM

Yes, there is a test button the the reservoir cap, but the test facility has to be operable from the driver's seat.

I just use handbrake to test the light from driving position - passed SVA no problem - no seperate switch required for me (same as Mackie's diagram). I guess the button on resevoir cap is to test the fluid level switch is OK as well as the light.

Would you want to risk not knowing that your brake fluid is low and therefore potentially about to loose your brakes

Do you look under the bonnet EVERY time you get in the car?

all i'm saying is thats what the manual says! I'm surprised too, because it says you don't have to have a light!

Thanks all.
I wired it and it works.

Thanks, Marco
