small battery
2b_pablo - 13/12/07 at 12:22 PM

whats the locost version of a race battery? few kgs to be saved and some space freed up if I use a small battery but dont fancy paying 80-100 quid for a race one.

any locost alternatives? would a motorbike battery start a pinto?

cheers

Find out the cold start/cranking capacity of your existing battery, then check it on the battery you want that is smaller, they need to be similar. IIRC it and amps over a time

Mr Whippy - 13/12/07 at 12:33 PM

these look quite locost.

I just have a middle of the road halfords battery. I dont think the numbers mean too much to my application.

Get yourself a "895SE" designed to fit a Reliant Robin/Fox. Or a Bike battery.

Just make sure your engine starts well. I have one on an A-series engined GTM, and had no problems, just need to make sure the webers are full of fuel before I try to start it.

Voltage: 12V
Capacity: 28Ah
Cold Start: 300A (SAE)

Dimensions(mm)
186 x 125 x 171

Many use an Odysey(sp?) I think.
But I'm sure they're only £70 or so.

Went to Halfords recently nearly fell over when my girlf' 1.1 Fiesta battery was £65!

Cheers,
James

trade card gets nearly half off tho

viatron - 13/12/07 at 02:47 PM

quad bike battery, but car needs to be a good starter 2 or 3 goes and you may be out of juice, about £35 from my local farm supplies place

2b_pablo - 13/12/07 at 02:59 PM

some jap cars have little small batteries dont they?

worX - 13/12/07 at 03:01 PM

I hate to be a stickler to all the excellent (? ) comments so far, but why don't you just put a normal Ford (or equiv.) type battery on it?

Steve

Halfords are very expensive for batteries, though they do have a good, no quibble guarantee. If you need a battery for a tin top then find your local battery specialist in the yellow pages; the battery for my MR2 was under half of Halfords price for the same guarantee period.

look here

http://www.barden-uk.com/varta-automotive-engine-start-batteries.html

Give you battery properties and weight, i think the size different will be small, but the 063 looks good an just over 10kg with an acceptable cold cranking current.

If yo use a lower capacity battery it will have a short life

2b_pablo - 13/12/07 at 03:39 PM

for all it will be used I could live with that lol!

once a fortnight would be ambitious

Macbeast - 13/12/07 at 04:17 PM

But infrequent use = shortened life

2b_pablo - 13/12/07 at 05:02 PM

I think Ive had a better idea. my robinhood is noseheavy enough so Im considering moving the battery to the rear boot area! will free up some engine bay space and also move the weight to the back.

best halfords had was a 14Ah bike battery

chriscook - 14/12/07 at 07:57 PM

I use one of these with my XE engine. Has been doing the business although I do keep it on a optimate.

Last time I needed a new battery (for my daughter's Golf GTi) the cheapest place by far was the local VW garage! About £15 cheaper than Halfords, and for a brand name, Varta I think.

The same also happened a few years back when I needed a battery for a Carina E - the cheapest place was the Toyota dealer.

It is WELL worth shopping around...

02GF74 - 18/12/07 at 02:46 PM

maplins are selling these for £ 20.

there'll be a tiny batty in there and you can have 4 for the price of one pc680.

yes, it may not last as long but worth a try?

2b_pablo - 18/12/07 at 02:57 PM

could do with a porta pack anyway as my current battery is dead.

nice find
