Hi all,
Just curious as to what stipulations people have on their kitcar insurance regarding what happens to it in the event of a crash.
I can imagine a kitcar being technicaly written off without much true damage due to lots of 1-off components etc, I'd hate to get a car I'd
built written off and taken away without a cast iron guarantee that I could buy it back off the insurance company so was wondering what have peoples
experiences with different companies been in such circumstances or if anyones asked/seen their companies policy??

Isnt there a kit insurance company who advertises on here that offers "parts only" insurance so that in the even of damage, you get the
funds to rebuild the car yourself??
I know if i damaged a car i'd built myself, i'd rather repair it myself - with the obvious exception of chassis repairs to a factory chassis

Mine was written off, I got a full payout and told I could not keep the car. I took most of the decent stuff off the car and kept stalling the
insurance company regarding the collection of the car. When the car was stripped to the bare bones they arranged to come and collect it and never
arrived.
Eventually I cut it up and took the metal to the scrap yard.
If questioned I was going to say the parts must have been stolen as the car was sat next to the road for 2 months waiting to be collected.
I'm not sure it would play out the same way again, I was lucky.
Livelee, that's the sort of scenario I'm worried about (although I don't know how damaged yours was), short of a heavily twisted chassis etc, there's so much that could be easily made right in short order without going all the back to 2 years+ building a new car but I could see an insurance company saying, ooh, broken suspension mount, panel damage, buggered engine - that's a write off mate - sorry!
Ive just been to see a ghost car...cat b write off thats been taxed and moted for the last three years. Vosa say its ok but dvla say its a b. Cars
been repaired but not very well ....well enough to fool the unwary. Took mac and I a good halfhour to see the problems. 63800 ctc then reg probally
the best three quid you will ever spend.
The sad thing was the owner had been taken for 8k and had no idea it was a write off.
Seems they got it back from the insurance and punted it on

I hpi`d every car i look at before i view.
It costs as low as £2 to check, anything over 10 miles and you are quids in.

Im with frank Pickles, and they offer a parts only policy, so i price it up, give them the quote and they send me the money.

Just to clarify incase I misled - I'm not worried about buying a write-off, just don't want to insure my kitcar with a company that
doesn't let you buy it back (or repair it DIY like MakeEverything) if it's technically a write off because the engines damaged/panel
scratched, other assorted easily fixables etc.
Example, I had a ducati monster 900 years ago written off with no option to buy back because of a penny sized dent in the petrol tank that you could
barely see and a scratch in the anodising on both fork legs (a non moving/slidey part) which were something like £2500 from Ducati.. It's not so
bad on a purchased car/bike but I'd have been livid if that was a car as personal as a kit.
