car recommendations for £2-3k
sdh2903 - 12/3/10 at 11:45 PM

I'm going to be selling on my recently aquired Clio 182 as I just cant gel with it. Its quick and corners well but its got to go. I'm looking to get something for around the £2-3000 mark and i'm looking for some ideas from you guys!!

Looking for something a bit interesting i.e not plain jane focus/mondeo etc (no offence as i am a ford man and have owned both).

Doesnt have to be particularly economical as i dont do many miles (but a bonus if it is).

Has to be fairly reliable, ie dont want to be spending a fortune keeping it going.

No size restrictions as we have a family bus zafira for child transport.

Any suggestions?

best ive come up with is an E36 328 coupe, E39 5 series, skoda octavia vrs.

Might say its a girls car, but in terms of fun to drive, practical. Ford Puma!!!!

sdh2903 - 12/3/10 at 11:49 PM

Ive had one of them too! was a good car but I dont think i would get one now, unless it was a racing puma, but doubt that would be in budget!

eddie99 - 12/3/10 at 11:50 PM

Yeah i think FRP's are 4k+

Remember for 2k you should be able to build 8 locosts. Maybe thats a better option

No ambush intended, but am about to sell my wifes 4motion passat (estate), 4wd (torsen), 30V 2.8V6, fast comfortable cruiser - only selling cos the missus mileage for work has gone up massively and need to get a dsl....

Am after £1750 for it.

morcus - 13/3/10 at 07:00 AM

Get a Jag. £2K will get you a nice X300 XJ6, and I wouldn't have thought upkeep would be any more than on a hot hatch.

Worzey - 13/3/10 at 08:02 AM

Nissan 200SX - 200BHP, rear wheel drive, LSD......

One of the most entertaining cars I ever owned - well spec'ed as well.

I'll 2nd that.huge fun on roundabouts and deceivingly fast.comfortable too if your on a long trip

Some really interesting options being thrown up here.

The 200sx, I just dont like the styling, i can understand the appeal and they have cracking engines, but their just not for me.

I'm not sure I should be admitting this being 26 but i really like the look of that volvo!

205 - definitly out, been there done that, good for a second car but not for a daily runabout.

Estate cars are out too, unless a nice audi avant, but again think out of my range.

Jag - not for me, still got the pipe and slipper whiff about it sorry!

I cant beleive how much car you can get for 3 grand nowadays! I dont suppose anyone wants a clio 182??

sdh2903 - 13/3/10 at 10:03 AM

Anyone any experience of these pair:

Golf GTI turbo. We had one as a company wh*re for years. LPG converted, 200BHP after a bit of "fettling". It went pedal to the metal everywhere, all the time. It ate its cylinderhead after a quarter of a million kilometers. Fitted a new one and it's still going strong last I heard of it (it's sold on). Very capable car.

Otherwise: 850 / S/V/C70 5 pot turbo. I currently have one of these and love it. Fairly expensive on fuel though...

Nowt wrong with an OvLoV I have had a T5 son currently drives a T4 worth looking at not as big as the T5 but 200bhp and capable of 350bhp

tegwin - 13/3/10 at 11:36 AM

Seat Ibiza Cupra... (R if you can find one)....

1.8T... remap to 200hp.... should be doable for 3K...

Liam - 13/3/10 at 11:55 AM

You really need to be pimpin in a big old barge - it's the only way to roll. Shocking amount of car for the money. The Passat 4-motion (really an audi quattro) and the volvo are along the right lines. My mates mondeo ST220 is faster in a straight line, but just not pimpin enough and wrong wheel drive. My preferance is a nice RWD Omega Elite. In fact I'd literally sell my familly for this one which is the same as mine, but has all the once ultra expensive Irmscher bits - bumpers, skirts, wheels and exhaust. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Might be now, but previous gen Passat was built on audi a4 platform and really is a proper longitudinal engine quattro underneath.

Jasper - 13/3/10 at 02:03 PM

LOVE my E39 BMW, would never have another car for my daily driver, fast, very comfortable, solidly built, no need for indicators and other people tend to get out the way when approached fast from behind in the fast lane!!!

Just about to have the 3lt turbo diesel engine chipped too.... can't have enough torque

Oh no it's not.

**Anorak Alert**

B5 and B5.5 Passats are mechincally identical to the same age A4s being built on the same platfrom.
If it's a Quattro on this platform, it's multi link suspension and torsen Quattro IV whether it's a Passat or an A4.

No Haldex clutches - proper, permanent 4wd.

the current B6 Passat however is really a LWB Golf.

***Anorak Alert Ends***

I used to have a Passat 4mo myself, but the whirly bits underneath in a synchro are the same.

Great car.

Pity it wasn't the family bus you were replacing as mate tipped me off today to a really low mileage R75 in Wishaw
