its actually a brilliant idea, i'm surprised no one thought about it like 20 years ago!

Like all the best ideas, it's one of those ideas where you think "why the hell wasn't that thought of before".

Having said that, it's not without a precedent. Before they were banned, back in about 2003, the top plate of the rear wing was designed to flex with wind pressure and bend such that it changed the downforce characteristic at high speed. This could be seen when Kimi's top plate exploded and he immeadiately span. It broke because it was so thin so it'd flex. Obviously a bit too thin!

So the alternative is to change the air flow round a fixed wing instead of changing the wing. As an automatic device is not allowed that leaves the driver doing it somehow... hence the knee trick!

Don't think so... they came up with the idea during the 2008 season according to Whitmarsh.
Bear in mind it's part of a homolgated chassis so it must have been designed a fair while ago.

Cheers,
James

I think its a great idea. Problem is that it will make more overtaking until everyone has one.

as i believed it there was an agreement between the teams that they would not look at stalling the rear wing. so i can imagine that most teams would have looked and understood how to use it but never implemented it.

Its an inspired peice of technology, i dont think once everyone has it that will be the end of it, different systems by different teams will produce different amount of stalling over the rear wing and thus different straight line results, bear in mind its only worth 3-4MPH on the shorter circuits it wont help as much as you think!
