Hi there, I'm asking this on behalf of a mate (honest it is for a mate lol) but he has a j10 which seems to be pulling away in 2nd and not 1st
gear, he seems to have to rev the engine whilst going along to make the gearbox catch up to change gear but when it does it seems to go to top gear
(3rd) it only changes gear once and that's around the 50mph mark.
Unfortunatley he seems to think that originally it was working ok (but can't be sure) until he was driving at night when it was first going and
accidentally went to high with the gear lever snd selected reverse whilst going along the engine cut out and then wouldn't start, it was left and
then jumped in the morning and it fired and ran but since he seems to think its now pulling away in 2nd and not 1st, could the accidental reverse
caused this? When reverse was slightly selected the instant reaction so I'm told was to let go of the gear selector.
The transmission fluid was low before it was ran but was topped up and is still ok although it was never completely drained and refilled
Any ideas?
It's a V8 lump btw
Sounds like a broken brake band in the gearbox to me.
A thought occurred to me I assumed the Jeep has an AMC or Chrysler engine and matching Torqueflite transmission, if it has a V8 transplant
from an older Chevy it could have a Powerglide transmission which only has 2 gears.
This story high lights the dangers of hand shifting an automatic, the selector levers on transmissions of this era were not designed for
hands shifting it is very easy to go through Drive into Reverse or even into Park.
