Hit by a road sign
Worzey - 13/6/13 at 07:36 PM

Driving back home down the M40 today in the tin top. Minding my own business when a road sign blows across the carriageway straight into the front of my car. Bang!

I've got a few scratches on the bonnet, it knocked out a parking sensor and strangely I've got loads of sticky sign all over the front grill but not too much damage. Sensor clipped back in and the scratches might T-Cut out.

Not worth claiming on the insurance but lucky it didn't come straight through the windscreen as it could have decapitated me! It's times like this that remind me why I always wear a helmet in the Velocity but even that might not have helped

I think it was a keep left sign it had blown across from the opposite carriageway in the wind.

Scary stuff

makes a change from "a tree jumped out in front of me"

Years ago a mate of mine was behind a truck in his capri and one of the Tyre de- laminated and hit the car destroying all the front /windscreen /roof .
The car was a right off

I once followed a skip truck when a bit of rubber fell off the back. It bounced a few times in the road and then bounced over the roof of my car.

It was as it passed the windscreen and my head by a few inches I realised it was a house brick

Funny how well they bounce at 70mph...

On my way to SVA retest with a friend (him in front in tin top) went over a 2 1/2' woodsaw, which sprang up about 10' and landed about 2' in front of me. Had bashhat on at the time, and tucked head down as far as I could - as little neck exposed as possible

Glad you're ok !

Temp or perm sign? Speak to highways auth as you should be able to claim.

An 'Act of God'? in insurance terms.. I think Billy Connolly went for the culprit at some previous stage.

Last 'projectile' type thing that hit me unexpectedly was a collection of bicycles! They fell off the back off a Range Rovery type thing that had just overtook, braked heavily in my braking zone and sped off. Usual protest type thing, as I was towing the trailer (legally slowly as usual). Underside of the van and trailer were scraped somewhat.

Not really worth chaing the Highways Agency as the damage is minimal. They are also a client of mine.

It was a tempory sign. Obviously a self adhesive type as most of it attached to the front of the car!

At least there was a sign for something. Round our way they seem to think it's ok to leave 100mm ramps (not ramps as such, just "highway surface was ripped up here" edges and raised ironwork unmarked (or at best signed on or after the obstacle) on NSL roads with no street lighting.

I have to admit I thought I was going to see a seven bent around a very static looking sign!
