My brother in law asked me a question the other day that completely flummoxed me. Having never driven on the continent, I was vaguely aware of the
need to carry spare bulbs (and breathalysers and other odds and ends). But his new VW truck-thing (Amarok?) has no 'regular' bulbs, every
one of them is either an LED or something more exotic. The chances of being able to replace them with anything at the side of the road are absolutely
zero.
So in that case, what does he need to do when he heads to France and Spain on hols? Does he still need to carry spare bulbs even though there's
nothing short of new light units that would actually fix an issue.
Also, does anyone know how he can find out how to set the lights to drive on the right? Apparently the best he's found so far is that the car
will know it's on the continent and will adjust automatically? It seems to have lots of bells and whistles so I wouldn't be surprised if it
switched automatically. But if it doesn't switch when he lands in France it'll be too late to do anything.
Re soare bulbs, found some info to say that there is no requirement o carry spare bulbs, but you can be fined if you have a bulb not working.
I have a bag of assorted bulbs that get stashed in whatever car I am taking to europe. But as most of my cars are old a std set of bulbs is more than
enough. I have recently converted them to LED headlight bulbs (cars old enough to allow that) but I even bought a cheapy spare H4 led.
as to cars knowing where they are, they are cleverer than me! but with onboard GPS it makes some sense. Guess a main stealer will know.
Don't know about the Amrok but other VWs (and Audi) the dip direction can be reset in the dash computer. Think it's under Configuration - lights.
A lot of the petty rules have been dropped, like breathalyser in France and bulbs. We had a 2200 mile around Europe last year all I had to take was
some High Viz (1 per person) and mark my car with GB stickers.
I have an 2020 Audi A5 and when we pulled of the Eurostar it popped up saying it is changing to a RH lane driving. It even switched my digital dash
etc to KM instead of miles.
