Building your own...do it again?....or not?
Alan B - 21/1/04 at 05:07 PM

Simple really...is/was this just a means to an end?....or did/are you enjoying it so much that you will do it again?

Me?....I love the building part....

Definite, yes I'd do again in a heartbeat..

Hopefully, some new starters will get some good clues from this..which ever way it goes..

built it, got the t-shirt.

I wouldn't do it again because it isn't as much as a challenge.

Next time I will sample a kit and various other styles of car.

but it was fun and I enjoyed the build and I'm still enjoying the modifications it is going through.

mark.

Yes. And err, no.

I would build again if I had access to better workshop facilities, as the time/effort involved increases greatly with lack of tools/equipment.

Big lottery win = huge fully kitted workshop, more 'projects'

Now the Locost is finished (well no, there is loads I want to do to it, but driving it is more fun), I am restoring/converting my '89 Westy to bike power and Dedion. And shortening the wheel base. And making the track wider.

So I get to drive, and build.....

yes

JoelP - 21/1/04 at 07:22 PM

though i havent finished the first, i intend to make many more! i'll only be doing the chassis thing myself if its not a standard one. infact i'd only do the 'book' chassis if it was for all out power. ie if i get money for a major power engine, i will buy a standard chassis to stick it in, otherwise it will be rear engined beasts. and a tank. and, maybe, a sub one day. oh, and a boat too...

oh yeah, and something to enter in the paris dakar rally.

stephen_gusterson - 21/1/04 at 08:01 PM

im glad I started this car as it the challenge more than the driving for me.

however, it does tend to stay in your mind every day. its like a 4 year old disease that cant be cured. one day, it will be in the garage, finished, to be driven when i feel like it. no more worrying that i really should be out there doing summat, or trying to work out how to overcome the next problem.

next time I build a car it will be as a time filling hobby, likely when im no longer working. Im not selling this car and starting all that process again.....

might get a bike to do up after tho - KH250 kawasaki - the bike I bought new at 18

Peteff - 21/1/04 at 09:04 PM

You can use the edit button in the top right corner to change things if you get them wrong TPG.

I'm building a chassis with some modifications this time and might put a bike engine in this one.

yours, Pete.

Oh yes. A honda ss50 and a BSA bantam before. came off all of em. car totalled the bantam pulling out on me and same happened to the KH250 - cept it was saved.

came off a few times - jap bikes had dodgy tyres and disks in the wet at that time.

anyway.....im 44 now..

the previous s2 350, and the kh500 / H1 were supposedly far more evil.....kh250 was a pussycat in comparison

Good question Alan.

For me it's the challenge of the build. It's a giant, kinda expensive 3D puzzle right?

I don't think it would be nearly as much fun for me if I were following someone elses instructions. Been there. Done that.

Jasper - 22/1/04 at 12:25 PM

Yes - definitely - though may buy a kit next time as I think I would want a more usable long distance car.

As someone has already said though - it was a complete 24/7 obsession for a while there (about 18 months actually!) and in some way it's nice to have my head back to concentrate on other things for a while - like my business!

I'll wait till I have big/better facilities and a bigger budget.

theconrodkid - 22/1/04 at 12:38 PM

my next,if there is one, will have a roof

mackie - 22/1/04 at 12:42 PM

I'd say yes, but maybe a kit and probably in a few years when I'm more settled.
Quite fancy a Dax Trojero with a hard top and a proper 427 engine.

dblissett - 22/1/04 at 10:05 PM
