hi all im lee and am thinking of building a locost !! i am a full time mechanic and mot tester from north lincolnshire .
the chassis is going to be a easy build but the choice of engines gearboxes rear axle is so diverse i dont know what to use !! hope some one will
point me in the right direction !!
i do have a spare rover v8 not doing anything but i dont know if this would be suitable thinking of a westfield se8 ???
or to use something smaller with higher hp ??
anyhow thats it for now you might be seeing a few more posts as i get in to a build

Buy your self the haynes roadster book and get some sierra running gear.
Any engine you fancy, you can build the chassis around it.

So, can I be first to suggest a Rover T16, or how about a 6 cylinder Volvo engine?
Then theres zetecs, blacktops and if you can put up with a screaming little girl a bike engine?

V8 good motor to go for iam building a luego viento with the rover V8 engine linked to ford running gear all ways a populer chose but if i was to do
it all again id like to trans plant and runing gear from a subaru
what ever you go for some one on hear will have done it or will all ways be able to help iver with words or hands on good look with what ever you pick
and i no you will enjoy it

The mechanicals depend upon your financial situation and your ability. The kent engine is cheap tuneable but old hat, pinto still easy to get hold of
strong tuneable heavy, zetec and Duratec tuneable good power and tuneable. all the previous mate to the type nine box keeping cost down.
other engines need some type of adapter to fit to the ford rwd box ie vauxhall red top
The V8 is a big heavy unit lots of grunt but will need more work and money for power gains. sell the V8 and use the money to buy your drivetrain

use the engine you want to and get some sierra running gear.
I built mine with a pinto and am now converting to zetec.

thought about bike engine but a bit concerned about chain driven diff and cost initially maybee in the future see what happens with a car engine first .
Try and get to as many events as you can and have a look at the cars and talk to the owners before you decide whick way to go. There's plenty of
guys on here from your area so you should be able to track down some meets.
Running gear of choice is generally Sierra although there are other (less well used) choices like MX5. Engine choice is up to you and what you want
from the car. The essence of these cars is their low weight and handling and a V8 doesn't really go with that but each to thier own.
Check out a bike engine car and get a ride and you'll know what you want!

Bike engine uses normal diff/propshaft set-up unless your going for a mid-engine.

Welcome to locostbuilders, the fount of all knowledge! Most bike installs in a 7 style car use a propshaft adapter onto bike engine, a shortened
propshaft and a sierra diff ect so no need to worry about chains :-)
(just worry about the propshaft instead...:-( )
If you haven't been in one i'd seriously recommend blagging a shot before making choice of engine in your car. The screaming revs and 6
speed sequencial box make for an excilirating drive!
