shawspeed project
beaver34 - 25/11/09 at 08:22 PM

been on here a while, dont really post but though you may be intrested in the car i have been working away with,

its abit long winded maybe should have started it at the start of me doing it, ohh well

pics of car before, my first car pride and joy but one thing led to another and i wanted more from it and it would have cost alot

and what it donated to my kit car

my shawspeed spec built by me 1600 zetec se engine,

beaver34 - 25/11/09 at 08:27 PM

broke the ka for parts, shell went to ireland to be rallied, kept engine and omex management from the car

then i went to see and purchased this from jon at shawspeed who was allready a good friend after supplying me the parts to build the ka,

looks abit worse for wear as you can see,

beaver34 - 25/11/09 at 08:32 PM

car was raced by the daughter of the total kit car mag in the 750 motor club, car came as seen its a live axle came with quaife h pattern type 9 box mini lites with a048's and thats about it really, had sva before is on a 54 reg, has a full cage by caged aswell,

gave it a clean and removed stickers

new clutch

bellhousing

dummy engine fit

beaver34 - 25/11/09 at 08:35 PM

got seats for last xmas,

from mac 1

afew more pics from the build

beaver34 - 25/11/09 at 08:40 PM

beaver34 - 25/11/09 at 08:46 PM

car then was carted off to be mapped again to suit the engine mods from the fwd install to the rwd,

down to track and road in london, abit of a treck from leeds but worth it ever time ive been,

had afew cooling issues but apart from that went well,

after a year in the ka engine still pushing the samish power,

175bhp at 7950 125lbft at 6400,

had a little drive in the car park having never driven a kit car or anything rwd before, and it was mad to say the least!

after we got it home got plates for it

did dash adding rev counter speedo and new guages

beaver34 - 25/11/09 at 08:56 PM

picked up a set of new 14" image split rims for it,

also got a tran x plated diff for it

got it tracked up and then moted

then hit the road!

was great fun, didnt really hammer the car as wasnt sure how it would react/drive but was very impressed, totaly different from a fwd car

got to local westfield meet and got biggers mirrors from spa

beaver34 - 25/11/09 at 09:02 PM

got a pair of lids and an intercom system

shift light system

which is a great bit of kit!

then broke down!

wiring loom got caught on some tape which caught the prop, not good in the fast lane on duel carriageway,

aa time!

fixed it at service station anyway and got it home

beaver34 - 25/11/09 at 09:04 PM

apart from that drove it all summer, did about 1400 miles, had some nice pics taken at elvington when iwas watching him on his drag bike,

beaver34 - 25/11/09 at 09:08 PM

then it broke, braked for a junction and it snapped a lower arm,

lucky it was near work so i got a pump truck and moved it out of the way

then got it forked lifted back to work where i could leave it

the damage

which brings us up to now really, car is still sat outside full of water, picking some new arms up this weekend, then i start the next phase of the project over the coming 3 months!

Werner Van Loock - 25/11/09 at 09:15 PM

was built just as a race car,

im converting it to RHD over winter,

engine is fantastic, very light and a fair amount of power for a small car, i was going to keep it LHD and duratec it but decided i dont really need another 25bhp and would preffer it RHD

bob tatt - 25/11/09 at 09:19 PM

looking good see you broke down on the A64 then. what part of leeds you in was trying to figure it from the pics but failed.

tul214 - 25/11/09 at 09:29 PM

My 1st ride in a kit was in this

shawspeed
shawspeed

It went very well around Brands.

Always thought they looked like a nice car. I seem to recall there where lots of LHD cars because they raced they in Spain?

Mark

55ant - 25/11/09 at 09:30 PM

love it! and also great that you used it over the summer. also ka is pretty cool with 175bhp in it,

yeah they did alot for over there, half of shawspeed lives over there now, should be better for road use rhd for me anyway,

Theshed - 25/11/09 at 09:48 PM

Nice toy - so much better than that old Lancia Stratos replica you had....

That wishbone looks like it broke at the weld. If that is right I would check all of the others - in fact I would sling out all of the others.

ive got a pair of new ones, the car is being stripped down to a bare chassis and blasted and re powdercoated in the next few weeks

blakep82 - 25/11/09 at 11:04 PM

where do those warning lights come from? been looking for some for oil and ignition warning lights on my car (to match my starter button)

would also like a illuminated button exactly the same for the horn etc. any idea?

tul214 - 25/11/09 at 11:56 PM

Just been reading the new DT catalogue that dropped through my door and they look like these
warning lights

Sorry for Hijack,
What happens with the rivet holes??
I´m still building, but i painted my chassis with a "temporary" coating that I would like to re-do whenever I´m ready for final assembly.
But now I´m in the crossroad to apply topcoat or blast an apply proper anticorrosive before the finaltopcoat.
Issues:
1 Hole enlargement
2 grit getting inside the tubes.
3...?any other that you guys foresee..

Thanks

beaver34 - 4/12/09 at 07:39 PM

new arms,

beaver34 - 6/12/09 at 06:18 PM

update,

time for the start of the winter resto, didnt really mean to get this far but it sort of happened, only wanted to take the dash off, but i didnt even do that, i am getting better though, just under 3 hours from driving in to the garage and 1 cup of coffee

beaver34 - 13/1/10 at 09:22 PM

havent updated it in a while been xmas and all that, ill just upload the pics you can prob work it out from there,

beaver34 - 13/1/10 at 09:28 PM

took a trip to shawspeed just bvefore xmas to pick my present to myself up, (sad i know)

near enough got snowed in while i was there! got stuck trying to get out of the services! lonely beetle

anyway went to pick this up, wanted one for ages and ages, its great runs straight into the omex ecu and picks all the sensor up from there, just had oil temp and pressure to add,

no time messing about, got it powered up

beaver34 - 13/1/10 at 09:34 PM

parts piling up in the garage,

getting near finishing removing parts

thats where im at at the moment, going to autosport on friday for some motivation to do something with it

RK - 14/1/10 at 02:16 AM

Did you decide on a colour? I think white looks good. Just MHO.

thanks

Yellowperilous - 25/1/10 at 05:32 PM

I have the Shawspeed in the picture at Brands Hatch. It's been on the road and going really well since first reg in September 04. It is my son driving at Brands and I drove your car for many laps on the same day. My engine is same state of tune as yours giving 175bhp. This winter's upgrade is a shortened sump having smashed mine last year. We must make contact and meet up one day this summer as there arn't many Shawspeeds about.
Regards
Mike

very good mike, hope my car was ok for you!

johnH20 - 11/3/10 at 08:02 PM

Hi, very impressive all round. What exactly is your engine spec for 175 bhp?
Funnily enough I am thinking of doing the reverse to you - a racing Puma engined Ka!

beaver34 - 11/3/10 at 10:45 PM

Thanks,

your inlet on a frp is an issue will not clear the bonnet,

My spec was Shawspeed ss4 cams
Shawspeed uprated rod bolts
Shawspeed big valve worked head
hayabusa throttle bodies
Omex managment

rev limit at 8k did 10k like this, i've pulled it apart now for rebuild should see 200bhp when i've done

beaver34 - 20/4/10 at 09:53 PM

long time no update so ill add some more pics, i forgot about the thread to be honest

beaver34 - 20/4/10 at 09:54 PM

beaver34 - 20/4/10 at 09:57 PM

beaver34 - 20/4/10 at 10:01 PM

chassis finished!

beaver34 - 20/4/10 at 10:06 PM

beaver34 - 20/4/10 at 10:07 PM

there we are all up to date for now, will be cracking on in the next few weeks to get it back on the road asap

Madinventions - 22/4/10 at 10:39 AM

Just a quick question - looking at your engine shots from the first page, your tensioner pulley is considerably smaller than standard.

I've got a Puma engine fitted in my Mojo and space is so tight that this pulley rubs against the chassis durinng hard cornering... I'm using the tensioner assembly from a 1.25 Fiesta which is similar to yours, but I was wondering about your setup. Is your tensioner pulley smooth faced? If so, then I think that it was originally the other idler pulley that has been moved onto to tensioner. Do you know what mods were done to the tensioner to make it fit? The pulley on my tensioner is about 100mm diameter. This is a pic of my old 1.25 engine, but the belt routing and pulley sizes are the same on my Puma engine:

I've emailled Shawspeed with a similar enquiry but I thought I'd ask you directly as well..

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Ed.

beaver34 - 22/4/10 at 09:31 PM

mine is a standard ford item,

more than likley just a later super session of your part, i also work for ford so if you get the the engineering part number from your, is a combination of letters and numbers like 98a-1437-aa i will check it agaisnt mine and the lastest number from ford

Madinventions - 22/4/10 at 10:25 PM

The one I've got fitted is from a 1996 1.25 Fiesta, no A/C, no PAS and is part number 96MF-6A228-80.

Cheers,
Ed.

MakeEverything - 19/2/11 at 04:42 PM

Quality mate. Looks really good.

beaver34 - 19/2/11 at 04:44 PM

now the engine at the beginning of the year was supposed to be taken to the next level before it was n/a standard rods and pistons shaspeed big end bolts, ss4 shawspeed cams busa bodies and a trick head and it made 175bhp at 8000rpm, i had purchased some steel rods accralite pistons and ss6 cams and a set of jenvey dth bodies and was looking for around or over 200bhp n/a, the engine got built but wouldnt turn over by hand, it turns out the rods where mixed up anyway i lost the love for it at that point and left it in the garage over summer as i also have a old vw camper that i use to do the show round with the local club and we enjoyed using that,

anyway, i decided i want to build a turbo engine one day and called jon at shawspeed and he said yes he would like to do it, so we are doing it!

so 1600 zetec se,
lightened balanced knife edged crank
steel rods
custom accralite pistons
shawspeed turbo spec 2 cams making there debut
customer shawspeed inlet and tubular exhaust manifolds
garrett gt2871rs turbo
turbosmart external wastegate
omex 600 ecu

some up to date pics

thats about it for now,

piper have made the cams to spec and they should be here next week, then we can build the engine up!

beaver34 - 22/2/11 at 09:41 PM

arrived today

its mad how slim it is,

beaver34 - 30/9/11 at 06:37 PM
