What Stops You Selling ?
perksy - 27/7/10 at 08:54 PM

Just wandered what stops folks selling their cars which are hardly getting used ?

My Westy is sat in the garage and due to work etc is getting used less & less

Fair enough 220 brake in light car will always be fun when i get the chance to go out in it

BUT Finding it harder to beleive that the 12k its worth couldn't be better spent

Thoughts Lads ?

The work ive put into it, Thats about it.

Don't sell and use the money for something else as if its anything like my household it would become house money and would be less easy for me to go and 'blow' the equivalent amount on another car that 'isn't really needed'!

snap
My car has been on the road since May 1st and only done about 150 miles

Dangle_kt - 27/7/10 at 09:03 PM

knowing from day one its a toy.

that said, I also know if needs must then I could sell the car to free the cash up.

£12k is a lot of other toys!

jase380 - 27/7/10 at 09:04 PM

put it up for sale then sit back and await the barage of emails from an assortment of people who dont know what a kit car is, why they want one, what to do when they get one, and then cant fix it when they get one.... can you tell mines for sale ?

Gordy - 27/7/10 at 09:14 PM

12 grand is alot of money but the next time your off work and the sun is out, you go into garage and theres a space where your westy used to sit, you'll regret it, i know i would

MakeEverything - 27/7/10 at 09:15 PM

Why would you sell it?

Yes, £12k would go a long way to clothing the kids, renovating practicalities and holidays, but then when youre kicking your heels next summer you will regret it.

Worst case, you could mothball it and keep it under a cover. Think of it as an investment, which wont depreciate.

prawnabie - 27/7/10 at 09:16 PM

I think i'm gonna be selling mine soon. Its only worth 2k ish but I will need the money more than I will need the car!

cryoman1965 - 27/7/10 at 09:17 PM

Coz i haven't got an mot sorted yet. Not driven it since las September

coozer - 27/7/10 at 09:19 PM

Coz I put all my love into it and its there when the sun shines and I fancy a blast.

Unless someone comes along with plenty of cash like...

whitestu - 27/7/10 at 09:20 PM

Cos it costs so little to keep it!

I agree, and I couldn't buy anything else with the same performance for the same price

I did consider selling it a couple of months ago and putting some cash towards it and buying an old 911 - but when the 911 breaks it will cost big ££££££, whereas if the MNR breaks I can fix it and it will be cheap

the 4 1/2 years i took to MAKE IT ( not assemble it ), the amount of years i dreamed of doing it before that. The smile on my face when I /we drive it, the people i have meet through having it.
The challenges it gives me when ever a problem occurs.
I would like to think i would never sell it

+1
My executors will sell mine.

When I get up at 5 in the morning and tiptoe it out of the drive as not to disturb the neighbours, pull away in 1st, short shift into 2nd and squeeze the throttle and the revs blast to 6k, snatch 3rd and correct the slide as 4th come quickly. Drive the B3306 from St Ives to St Just and return home by 7am.

Start work at 8am fresh and happy and I will probably repeat the process at 5pm!

The silly little car I spent 2 1/2 years building raises my quality of life like a lottery win. It cost £2250 to build and about £900 pa to maintain, fuel, tax and insure.

Bargain or what?

RazMan - 27/7/10 at 10:13 PM

I nearly sold it last year - after 3 years on the road I just thought it was time for a new project as I really miss the creative process that is involved in getting a totally unique car built.

However I decided to give it a makeover later this year so the obsession starts again, only (hopefully) with less money involved this time

FFTS - 27/7/10 at 10:24 PM

I don't know as its a real bargain for some lucky person. She is surplus to parking space and I'm keeping the VortX as toy.

If only i could have one in Greece.

6 months in the garage, 6 months out in the sun.

Wouldn't even use it for track days. Just cruising and the occasional burn out.

madteg - 27/7/10 at 10:32 PM

What else can you insure for 125 pound thats as fast as this.

Simon - 27/7/10 at 10:37 PM

No idea why I wouldn't sell it, other than it's the longest I've kept any car regardless of the fact that it didn't get registered till Jan 06, taken off the road in Oct 06 (having done 1500 miles).

It may, just may (if it passes an MOT tomorrow) be back on the road (till the next time I have a 6 week project to change something that turns into nearly 4 years!

When you build it yourself it becomes a part of you and they so much fun when you do get out in them and i do use mine when ever i can.

But

Mines up for sale as i have child number 2 due in 3 weeks and i dont envisage it getting used that much and i could do with the cash.

adithorp - 28/7/10 at 06:57 AM

Days like this...

DaveFJ - 28/7/10 at 08:33 AM

the fact that it 'owes' me about 12k and I would be lucky to 5k kind of oput a dampner on it... but also, it's something i made... it's like one of the kids!

will121 - 28/7/10 at 08:34 AM

mine sat in garage for two years now as brought a purely track day car and that takes my time, but not sold it as i think i would struggle to justify buying another one (especially at £12k in your case) if ever i wanted to.
Another reason is got divorced any my exwife still goes on about me selling it!! and for that reason alone i wont
main reason i would sell it is ive run out of space and would like to get the track tin top in the garage

That would make me keep mine too if I was in the same situation!!

Ninehigh - 28/7/10 at 05:23 PM

I've got a little Pug that belongs to the missus, all it needs is the rear brakes putting right and getting insurance. We both want to sell it but if I get a job a distance away (and thus can't use the moped) we're stuck... The money would be of good use right about now and missus has found an ideal job in chester, but she won't go for it because I might need transport...

perksy - 28/7/10 at 06:11 PM

Thanks for the replies lads

Some good comments there and one or two things i hadn't thought of

Need to give it some thought....

sonic - 9/8/10 at 10:51 PM

I sold my MNR R1 and on the right day with the sun out and a bit of spare time nothing could match it.

BUT!
I found myself waiting for the weekend to come get the MNR out and go for a blast, then it would P-ss down all weekend and be sunny on Monday morning on the way to work! really started to stress me out thinking i had 8K sat there waiting for that perfect day.
So i sold it when i started looking at what else 8K would buy that had a roof and doors etc that i could use whatever the weather and put the kids in and go for a ride to the coast etc.

I wish there was a place near me that i could get up on a given Sat or Sunday morning and it was dry and sunny go and hire one for a reasonable fee for the day and have some fun.
